Thin Bituminous Layer Assessment

Highway Testing Laboratory Ltd. has carried out a national study of the in-situ performance of a variety of thin bituminous surfacings in 2001/2002. The surfacings include Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), wearing course macadams, Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) surface dressings and other proprietary thin surfacings. Assessment of skid resistance was carried out using the Griptester. Macrotexture was primarily measured using the laser device on the ARAN in addition to comprehensive correlation to sand patch measurements.
